The advent of SPECT/CT fusion has brought about advances in nuclear medicine imaging yielding improved anatomical definition and localization of pathology. Ventiliation-perfusion scintigraphy has long been a useful diagnostic tool for evaluation of acute pulmonary emboli. SPECT imaging has enhanced the accuracy of scintigraphy in localizing perfusion defects. When the SPECT perfusion study is fused with a low-dose CT the added anatomic definition and localization of other causes of abnormal perfusion in the chest now increases the accuracy to diagnose pulmonary emboli. This presentation describes how SPECT/low dose CT fusion can enhance the sensitivity and specificity of ventilation-perfusion scintigraphy in the detection of acute pulmonary emboli. A protocol for SPECT/CT fusion used at our institution will be discussed as well as appropriate scenarios for its use, potential pitfalls and limitations in the interpretation of these studies. The presentation will show several examples of cases where VQ SPECT/CT fusion improves the diagnosis of pulmonary emboli compared to planar and SPECT images alone." @default.
