- W2396735218 abstract "Blake’s imitation of the prophets in his visions of the American and French Revolutions was a special instance of that reinterpretation of scripture which occupied him from adolescence to old age. The prose-poem entitled ‘Samson’, which appeared in Poetical Sketches, was clearly designed as the start of a biblical epic like Gessner’s The Death of Abel. His Swedenborgian period fostered his interest in those books which the New Church acknowledged as ‘the Word’; and it also encouraged him to look for ‘internal’ or allegorical meanings in apparently prosaic texts. When he turned against Swedenborg in The Marriage of Heaven and Hell, the weapons he used included allusions to Job, Isaiah, Ezekiel and the gospels; and he not only professed to read the Bible in its ‘infernal or diabolical sense’ but also claimed to have a ‘Bible of Hell’ ready for publication. Like other writers of the nineties, he found Old Testament prophecy an appropriate vehicle for comment on contemporary affairs; and in the visionary extravagance and obscurity of his continental cycle he approached the vehemence of St John’s attacks on Roman imperialism in Revelation." @default.
