- W2396782813 abstract "Since 1940, the population of the metropolitian area of Mexico City has grown from about 1.5 to about 15 million persons. Moreover, the capital's share of the nation's population has increased from just eight percent in 1940 to twenty-one percent in 1980. Such dramatic demo- graphic growth is also related to significant economic transformations: as 211 ISSN 0363-2024, c 1 981 The Institute for the Study of Man, Inc. ABSTRACT: The household economies of Tzintzuntzan (Michoacan) migrants living in Mexico City are discussed in terms of three major domains: production, distribution and consumption. A combination of ethnographic census data (for 145 migrant households) and participant observational data (gathered from I969-1981) reveal a wide range of activities that contribute to the economic viability of the migrant households. For these migrants, the village setting (with all of its economic and social support systems) remains a significant part of the economic sphere of action. Conversely/for many village-based households, the migrants in Mexico City provide access to the metropolitan labor and consumer markets. The Tzintzuntzan migrants in Mexico City are caught up in a vast urban system replete with obstacles and opportunities; during the decade of the 1970s, most of these migrants were fairly in establishing and maintaining a secure economic niche in the metropolitan system. In particular, the most successful of the migrants have been those able to combine tenured jobs in the formal sector with entrepreneurial activities in the informal sector of the urban economy. This study suggests that more attention needs to be given to the effects of the developmental cycle of the migrant household as a domestic group (including extended kin and in-laws) in measuring the long-term dimen- sions of the household economies of migrants in Mexican cities." @default.
