- W2397382110 abstract "Reviewed by: Performing Brazil: Essays on Culture, Identity, and the Performing Arts by Severino J. Albuquerque, and Kathryn Bishop-Sanchez Debora B. Zamorano Albuquerque, Severino J. and Kathryn Bishop-Sanchez. Performing Brazil: Essays on Culture, Identity, and the Performing Arts. Madison: U of Wisconsin P, 2015. Pp. 305. ISBN 978–0-29930–064-7. Performing Brazil is an innovative attempt to compile different studies about diverse topics related to Brazilian culture, identity, and the performing arts in the academic area. It is a well-written book whose objective is to present a panoramic view of different Brazilian artistic manifestations, such as high-spirited dance and music, as well as literary traditions, associated with the Brazilian identity. Performing Brazil offers a precise study of multidisciplinary nature and, as such, exposes the readers to different forms of genuine Brazilian art and culture. It is the first book to gather varied Brazilian artistic expressions not only in Brazil, but in other countries as well, which gives the study precision and credibility drawing on well-known theorists in the area of performance studies. In order to increase the investigation’s reliability, the book includes both marginalized and unusual manners of representation. The main aim of the book is to provide the reader with new approaches of critical investigation in the performing arts, especially those related to Brazil. In this sense, one can say that the authors reached their objective. The book’s main strength is giving to the reader a defined description of the cultural Brazilian manifestations such as performing arts, visual arts, music, dance, and even literature. All of these manifestations help to shape Brazil’s cultural identity. Another highlight the book presents is that the different essays are framed by historical context, mostly from the 1990s to the twenty first century, which guides the reader, especially readers who are not familiar with the field of Brazilian culture and identity related to the performing arts. This is especially outstanding when the study touches on the different ideologies Capoeira has taken when it migrated to the Unites States. In that case, it dates from the 70s. In other words, Performing Brazil reaches its objective, which is to provide the readers with new manners of conducting research about the performing arts. However, the book could have included more the topic of novelas, or soap operas, which are so popular in Brazil and currently offer the viewers an accurate and, at the same time, a [End Page 338] comprehensive narrative of Brazilian identity and culture through acting. In Brazil, novelas create a unified national public space that presents different spectators with a common vocabulary. Their role is to create a central space in which different Brazilian identities are shared. Moreover, novelas have helped to incorporate evolving political, social, and economic emerging issues in their stories, which reflect Brazilian culture and identity through the performing arts. In summary, the book is highly recommended for anyone who researches Brazil due to its precise information, content, illustrations of dance groups, historical context, pictures of visual and performing arts, and literary examples, such as the ideas of Clarice Lispector. In other words, this compilation of essays focuses on the multidisciplinary studies that an humanistic area such as Brazilian studies highly demands it. Therefore, students of Portuguese, Brazilian studies, Brazilian identity and all the university courses related to Brazilian culture will clearly benefit from reading Performing Brazil. Debora B.
