- W2397565914 abstract "Plasma cortisol, water intake, urine output and the packed cell volume (PCV) were determined in six adult Merino wethers exposed to hot-humid, hot-dry, cool-humid and cool-dry environments. The temperature-humidity index (THI) was used to determine the combined effect of ambient temperature and humidity on the values measured. The lowest mean plasma cortisol values (19·03 ± 6·23 nmol/l) were found during exposure to the hot-humid environment and the highest (43·64 ± 9·86 nmol/l) during exposure to the cool-humid environment. During exposure to the hot-dry and cool-dry environments, mean plasma cortisol levels ranged between 32·53 nmol/l and 41·56 nmol/l. Increased THI values were correlated with decreased plasma cortisol (P < 0·005). Sheep which had high plasma cortisol levels (32·21 to 58·61 nmol/l) consumed less water and had a lower urine output but a higher PCV value than sheep which had low plasma cortisol levels (8·13 to 32·13 nmol/l). In all the sheep increased plasma cortisol was correlated with decreased water intake (P < 0·005), decreased urine output (P < 0·005), but increased PCV (P < 0·001). These results suggest that exposure to heat depressed plasma cortisol but exposure to a hot-humid environment depressed it more (48%) than exposure to a hot-dry environment. In sheep high cortisol values may exert significant water-retaining activity and PCV may be a useful measure of plasma cortisol during heat stress experiments." @default.
