- W2398275224 abstract "Data on calcite c-axis orientations in ocular and genital plates of 88 echinoid species (mostly Recent regular forms) define the broad outlines of apical system crystallog- raphy. In nearly all species, apical system crystal orientations show a strong bilateral sym- metry that does not coincide with any other symmetry in the adult skeleton. The plane of bilateral symmetry is identical to von Ubisch's Primordialebene and is apparently fixed in the echinus rudiment before metamorphosis. Species that lack a true larval stage do not show this symmetry. Apical system crystallography exhibits greater taxonomic variability (generally at the family level) than is found in other parts of the skeleton. The variability is nevertheless well correlated with the phylogenetic development of the group and can be used as an independent phylogenetic character. There is essentially no correspondence between apical system crystal orientations and those of ambulacral and interambulacral plates. The functional significance of crystallographic patterns in the echinoid apical system is not understood. It is possible, however, that the arrangement of c-axes is useful to the organism as a navigational aid." @default.
