- W2398367052 abstract "September is the conference month. For politicians this means soundbites by the sea but health workers are less ostentatious. Across the country university halls of residence are almost—but not quite—cleared of drawing pins, bits of adhesive putty, and peremptory notices before being filled by carers with name badges.Everyone agrees that the most useful part of any conference is the social interaction. No organiser, however, carries this to its logical conclusion by dispensing with talks and simply keeping the bar open day and night. A formal programme is necessary and this means speakers. We academics cheerfully help. We understand. We were meetings secretaries ourselves once. What surprises us is the diversity. Every subspecialty, every part of the body, and almost every practical procedure now has a society. Those whose members use expensive equipment meet in posh hotels. Some societies are exclusively medical but many include scientists and nurses. In general, the smaller the proportion of doctors, the jollier the society. Some are female with only an occasional male accompanying person. Compared with men’s the speeches of female chairpersons are shorter, friendlier, more poised, and better prepared. All-female societies are happy to hire a discotheque for the sheer pleasure of dancing together after dinner. In my experience, all-male societies have reservations about this.We outside speakers need podium savvy. When asked to fax the chairman a curriculum vitae, we keep it as brief as possible, remembering times when the full version was read out verbatim.Though we prepare carefully, reality becomes apparent only on the day. Outside the venue, yellow AA signs give us mild tachycardia. Inside, we assess the atmosphere. Sometimes it is evangelical and we recognise how to evoke either hisses or murmurs of approval. We then have to decide whether to stir things up or opt for a quiet life.Sometimes we are invited to stay and be amusing after dinner. This is challenging. Humour is based on shared experience and the speaker is an outsider. Many societies have a guru—a senior figure, perhaps even a founder. Members pulling his or her leg are met with general hilarity and a tolerant smile from the guru but no visitor should attempt this. Rely on self deprecation if you want to be asked back." @default.
