- W2399684625 abstract "nPHE topic of imagination is one of those odd -* subjects which seems almost to disappear for long periods of time ; it has attracted the attention of scattered historical figures from Aristotle to Kant, but for a long time since Ryle addressed himself to the problem of mental images, the con? temporary literature on imagination has revolved mainly around a few narrowly defined issues. More recently, however, there has been an upsurge of interest in imagination, a development that is welcome for several reasons. First, imagination is part of the mental life of most people, and, as such deserves to be considered as a legitimate topic in philosophy of mind. Thus, one reason for investigating imagination more thoroughly might be a desire to show how it could fit into the broader context of debates about the general nature of mind and mental states. Ryle's attempts to do this sort of thing in The Concept of Mind are familiar by now; more recently, David Armstrong1 and D. C. Dennett have also discussed imagination within the framework of specific theories of mind. This sort of project seems espec? ially worthwhile in light of the fact that imagina? tion seems to be a paradigm of a mental event in its most troublesome form. There is an apparent lack of publicly observable phenomena or behaviour which might be reliably associated with imagining. In addition, the description of the object of imagina? tion?what we are aware of?raises many, many difficult questions, especially, for materialist theories. Finally, imagination embodies in a clear way all of the most important features of an in? tentional act of consciousness : when we we always imagine something, but the object imag? ined is usually not present, and may not really exist at all. For all these reasons, imagination ought to be recognized as an important topic in philoso? phy of mind, and deserves the attention it is once again beginning to attract. In addition to the interest that might be generated about imagination for_ its own sake, many of the specific problems that are usually associated with imagination also lead to a renewed demand for a coherent analysis of imagination. The issue of mental images may be the first topic to come to mind, but the problem of separating and connect? ing the many different senses of the word imagine, as well as questions about how reference to the object which is imagined is determined, also supply good reasons for wanting to investigate the topic of imagination. Although it is not possible to discuss all the major issues related to imagination here, there are many other important questions which are considered in the works included in the following bibliography." @default.
