- W2400913495 abstract "Aim: 1) To explore midwives reflections in factors that influences the choice of using epidural analgesia (EDA) in normal labour and to describe how user participation was reflected. 2) To discuss the relation between user participation and increased use of technology in labour. Results from the empirical research are presented in a scientific paper. Discussion of the relation between user participation and increased use of technology is presented in an essay. Literature Review: In addition to research literature on user participation and use of technology in labour, Thompson‟s taxonomy on patient involvement was used to discuss the question of interest in the empirical study and the essay. Method: In-depth interviews were conducted with seven midwives working in four hospitals in Norway in 2009. The analysis in this study was inspired by a discourse analytical approach to explore how midwives relate to underlying norms or discourses that contribute to their practices. The analysis showed the tension between user participation and use of EDA. This tension was chosen as subject for the essay, where Thompson‟s taxonomy of patient involvement was used to discuss the relation between user participation and increased use of of technology in labour. Results: The findings from the study indicate that contemporary midwives work within the intersection of two competing discourses; user participation versus professional autonomy, and labour as medical or natural event. The discourses that supported midwives seeing labour as a medical event appeared and were control, fear and efficiency discourses. The risks associated with use of EDA in labour supported midwives seeing labour as a natural event. In the essay the literature was used to identify and scrutinize mechanisms between user participation and increased use of technology in labour. Conclusion: The findings of the study and the discussion in the essay highlight the need for professionals to promote a critical discussion of the effect of user participation." @default.
