- W2402775380 abstract "The subject of suicide is a source of extraordinary stress for clinicians for it is one of the few fatal consequences of psychiatric illness. Moreover, suicide is one of the most common causes of legal actions against mental health professionals. It is imperative for mental health professionals to develop effective risk management skills when treating suicidal patients. By understanding the clinical and legal aspects of suicidal behavior, clinicians can implement strategies for successfully assessing and treating this population. Learning Objectives: Upon completion of training, participants can be expected to: 1. Become knowledgeable about the clinical and empirical research on suicide 2. Become knowledgeable about inpatient and outpatient clinical standards of care with suicidal patients 3. Become knowledgeable about legal standards of care with suicidal patients 4. Learn the essential risk-management guidelines necessary to implement sound assessment, intervention and management procedures. Biography: Wendy Packman, JD, PhD is a Professor of Psychology at Palo Alto University (PAU) and holds a clinical appointment at the University of California San Francisco (UCSF). She is the Director of the Joint JD-PhD Program in Psychology and Law at PAU and Golden Gate University Law School. She is admitted to the State Bar of California and is a licensed psychologist in California. Dr. Packman received her clinical training at Boston Children’s Hospital and the Judge Baker Children’s Center, and the Division of Behavioral and Developmental Pediatrics, UCSF Medical Center. Her research publications in pediatric psychology include studies of the psychological effects of bone marrow transplant on donor and non-donor siblings, psychological issues faced by children and young adults with inborn errors of metabolism. She has presented and written extensively on sibling bereavement and continuing bonds, the impact of a child’s death on parents, and the psychological sequellae of pet loss. In the area of psychology and the law, Dr. Packman has written on malpractice, ethical and legal issues in psychotherapy and has co-edited a book entitled Risk Management with Suicidal Patients. She has written judicial opinions on psychological disability in social security cases. Dr. Packman has given workshops on risk-management principles with high-risk patients, as well as presentations for genetic counselors and psychologists on risk-management guidelines. Her research interests include ethical and legal issues in child and pediatric psychology, risk management with suicidal patients, and malpractice." @default.
