• W2402808670 abstract "Activation of the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system (RAA) plays a key role in the progression of chronic kidney disease (CKD). RAA inhibitors, such angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitors (ACEi) and angiotensin receptor blockers (ARB) decrease the rate of progression of diabetic and non-diabetic nephropathy and are recommended therapy for CKD. Although these drugs are highly effective and are widely used in the kidney diseases, current treatment regimens with ACEIs and ARBs are unable to completely suppress the RAA system. Aliskiren, the first in a new class of orally effective direct renin inhibitors (DRI), is approved for the treatment of hypertension. Aliskiren has renoprotective, cardioprotective and anti-atherosclerotic effects in animal models that appear to be independent of blood pressure lowering. Early clinical data based on urinary protein excretion rates as a marker for renal function suggest a possibly novel role for aliskiren in treatment chronic kidney disease.
