An example is Michalewicz's comparison amongGAs using different constraint handling techniques on the 0-1knapsack problem. The following phenomena are observed inexperiments: 1) the penalty method needs more generations to find afeasible solution to the restrictive capacity knapsack than therepair method; 2) the penalty method can findbetter solutions to the average capacity knapsack. Such observationsneed a theoretical explanation. This paper aims at providing atheoretical analysis of Michalewicz's experiments. The main resultof the paper is that GAs using the repair method are more efficientthan GAs using the penalty method on both restrictive capacity andaverage capacity knapsack problems. This result of the averagecapacity is a little different from Michalewicz's experimentalresults. So a supplemental experiment is implemented to support thetheoretical claim. The results confirm the general principle pointedout by Coello: a better constraint-handling approach should tend toexploit specific domain knowledge." @default.
