- W2403219983 abstract "Modern Russian drama, from the time of Ostrovsky, has been invariably overshadowed by Russian poetry and the Russian novel. Anton Chekhov, the greatest Russian dramatist of the period, does not possess the same literary stature as Tolstoy or Dostoevsky and no later Russian playwright can compare with Mandelstam, Akhmatova, Tsvetayeva or Pasternak. Russian drama, as a phenomenon of cultural periphery, never spearheaded the process of artistic achievement as drama had done in Norway, Sweden and Ireland. The Russian transformation of European literature had already taken place when Chekhov turned to writing for the stage, and though Chekhov as a dramatist broke quite radically with traditional Russian theatre, the themes of his drama are more directly linked to the legacy of the novel than to a previous body of dramatic work. The clearest dramatic link is with Ibsen but even this undoubted influence is secondary to Chekhov’s place as a writer within Russian literature and Russian society. While Chekhov’s work and his relationship to the Moscow Arts theatre is as important to modern drama as any of the other major national developments of the period, it differs by operating partially in the shadow of the greatest peak of literary achievement reached in the novel form." @default.
