- W2405326273 abstract "Situated in a rural community of Jima in Highland Ecuador, this chapter reflects on the intimacies of consumption and the ways in which it is both embedded within and enacts affective relations. Specifically, it examines how the wives of migrated men invest in the long-term reproduction of their transnational household and maintain intimate relations with their geographically distant husbands — who are living in New York — through their everyday material engagements with commodities. The particular focus is on white goods, household appliances and clothing. Together with domestic architecture and food, which I have discussed elsewhere (Abbots, 2011; 2014a), these objects arguably bear the most emotional significance in this context and are drawn together through their intimate associations with migrated kin. As such, I explore the ways in which kinship, morality, commitment to family and transnationality are intrinsically interwoven through consumption and, in so doing, elucidate how the seemingly impersonal and alienated commodities of the market are made personal and intimate as they are brought into the domestic sphere. I thus draw attention to the ways in which public aspects of consumption, in terms of its capacity to construct and communicate social status and mobility, interplay with kinship and intimacy, as well as highlighting the gendered and class dimensions of these processes." @default.
