- W2405702906 abstract "In African – American writing there is a recurrent pattern of concern with identity formation. The writer who has dealt most authoratively with the problem of identity and transition of the blacks in the Deep South is Louisiana’s Ernest Gaines. His literature vivifies the history, local events, and mix of African –American, Cajun and Creole heritage that compose the multicultural identity of this cloistered community. His fictions explores many considerations among them the devaluation of black life( often illustrated black men who must seek their manhood who have been victimized by whites), the peculiar race and caste systems of Louisiana , and the ambivalence of slave-holders descendants who are now burdened by their legacy. This paper attempts to show how the characters explore and stretch their inner recesses of their own selves to face what they realize are their shadows, doubles or others in Ernest J . Gaines’ novel In My Father’s House (1978). It is contended in this paper that the understanding of identity brings to the fore questions of self-image, manhood, education and others. Each character goes through an inner sensation marking the acknowledgement of outer environment that also signals the start of an explicit quest for identity and family unity." @default.
