- W2407607580 abstract "In this thesis, we put forth a model of parallel computation motivated by observations of naturally occurring systems that possess a parallel-like operation. Three such systems are used as examples: ants, bees, and the mammalian immune system. From these examples, we form a combined set of characteristics that are the guiding principles of this work. The mobile-agent and shared-environment (MASE) model has two parts. The first part is the environment. It is the repository for any shared data. The second part consists of the agents, which are distinct processing units. They have five stages of operation: Read, Update, Write, Alter, and Motion. At any one time, the agents can communicate with the environment in a local area known as a receptive field. The agents change the location of their receptive fields within the environment via the motion routine. This action changes the portion of the environment that any particular agent communicates with. We present a software simulator that implements a restricted version of the MASE model. The purpose of the simulator is to act as a test bed for evaluating programs that are described in terms of the model. One important feature of the simulator is that it uses an object-oriented programming language to describe the separate processing units. Using the simulator, we investigate two aspects of the model. First, several routines that are common to programs utilizing our model are described. Second, the important problem of utility balancing is explored. We compare the concept of utility balancing to that of the more standard problem of load balancing. The characteristics of utility balancing for our model are outlined. We study one aspect of utility balancing by comparing two different strategies applied to the problem of feature tracing. Finally, since this thesis is the first one on the subject of the MASE model, we discuss the next steps of research, including a hardware realization of the model." @default.
