- W240808130 abstract "<title>Abstract</title> Among the sources of bioactive natural products, higher fungi (Badiomycetes) are promising for the production of new metabolites with interesting biological activities. This chapter describes the most active low-molecular-weight metabolites of Basidiomycetes that possess either significant cytotoxic, antitumour activities or that target various processes involved in the development of cancer (e.g. angiogenesis, metastasis, cell cycle regulation). Among them, 15 compounds present very attractive cytotoxicity (with a concentration that inhibits 50% growth of cancer cells (IC50) of <100 ng/ml) and some metabolites (illudins S and M) are the prime target for developing pharmaceutical agents such as irofulven, which is actually in phase II clinical trials. About 15 have already shown interesting activities such as DNA polymerases and DNA topoisomerases inhibition, nuclear factor-κB (NF-κB) inhibition and as antiangiogenic substances. These findings, associated with their vast structural and under-explored diversity, underline the great interest of these metabolites in drug discovery." @default.
