- W2408168900 abstract "Railway transport for both passengers and freight is steadily increasing in many countries around the world. This increase has been accompanied by significant improvements in safety standards and systems. Nonetheless, the number and severity of injuries and fatalities due to rail accidents has increased globally over the past few decades, especially in Asia and Africa. The severity of injuries is affected by a number of factors including accident type, impact speed, and interactions between fellow passengers and with train interiors. However, the contributory level of these factors on the injury severity is still not fully understood. This paper aims at understanding the effects of these factors by examining their impact during accidents on injury severity at the coach level. This is performed by analysing detailed information about the kinematics of each coach as well as passenger injury information for the UK major rail accidents in the period 1996-2007. These accidents were responsible of a total of 67 fatalities and 987 injuries. The coach–level information has been extracted in this paper from rail accidents reports as well as a large dataset from DeltaRail. An Ordered Probit model has been used for the analysis. The most significant factors affecting the injury severity have been identified as the coach deceleration, coach vertical and horizontal kinematics, and the cause of injury (ejection or structural intrusion). Accordingly, a set of coach design recommendations has been proposed. Issues encountered in the data analysis have been reported as well as recommendations for future data collections." @default.
