- W2408181589 abstract "Since the late 1970s, there has been a dramatic increase in the number of people incarcerated for acts of political violence in the United States. The charges include armed robbery, bombing of corporate and government buildings, assisting in the escape of radicals from prison, murder, sedition, and conspiracy to overthrow the United States government by force. Sentences range from several years to life. Virtually all of those imprisoned ? approximately 150 ? have long? standing histories in what can be defined as a small segment of the anti imperialist tendency of the Left. They include Black nationalists, Puerto Rican independentistas, and white radicals-in-solidarity-with-Third-World liberation-struggles.1 Within the spectrum of radical ideologies, many prison? ers indicate having been influenced by the ideas of revolutionary nationalist leaders such as Franz Fanon, Regis Debray, Malcolm X, and Che Guevarra. It is ironic that the 1980s, a period in which the American Left reached its weak? est point in 30 years, was chosen by these radicals ? most of whom were ac? tive in militant sectors of the protest movements in the 1960s ? to re-engage in armed struggle and peoples war in the U.S. Unfortunately, their actions provided more inspiration to the agents of counterinsurgency than to potential agents of revolution. During the first and second terms of the Reagan administration, government officials used these actions as the raison d'etre for expanding and intensifying measures of politi? cal repression within the United States. In the government's view, these indi? viduals are neither political dissidents nor ordinary criminals: they are home? grown terrorists.
