- W2410106523 abstract "Research on human development has consistently demonstrated that children require a strong foundation of physical, emotional, cognitive, and social supports to reach their maximum potential (Rogoff, 2003; Shonkoff & Phillips, 2000). Different cultures weave the strands of these supports together in varied patterns that have evolved in response to diverse natural and social environments. Concurrently, however, despite differences in culture and socioeconomic context, children have similar basic needs. These include proper nutrition; stable, loving relationships; education that fosters cognitive, emotional, and social development; positive role models; and safe, effective transitions from childhood through adolescence to adulthood and parenthood (Myers, 1992). In recent years, particularly since the promulgation of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC), many of children’s needs have been recognized as fundamental rights. Accordingly, while there is also widespread acknowledgment that children possess the inherent capacity to defend their rights, it does not shift the burden of responsibility away from adults, and particularly from governments, as duty bearers to ensure that these rights are realized. Indeed, children are dependent upon surrounding “circles of care,” that is, layers of adult support provided by individuals, communities, and institutions that contribute to the protection and enhancement of children’s basic rights and help to ensure secure social environments that guarantee the realization of these rights." @default.
