The Severn Bridge's box girder was the most innovative of solutions yet devised to increase torsional stiffness by encouraging the attachment of a smooth wind flow around the suspended structure to reduce aerodynamic forcing effects. With the box girder's success, it appeared that trusses and depth-to-span ratios—including the 1:100 maxim guiding many truss-stiffened post-Tacoma spans—were just two of several means to resist vertical bending and torsional motion. This opened up a host of intriguing possibilities, many obtaining stiffness not from the suspended structure but from the suspension system itself.
