- W2411404763 abstract "Abstract The Papuan Basin is a Mesozoic-Cainozoic depositional basin located on the northeastern edge of the Indo-Australian Plate. The depositional sequence and structural development of the Basin record the transition from a passive continental margin in the Mesozoic to an active continental margin in the Cainozoic. Deposition commenced in the Early to Middle Jurassic with generally continental clastic sedimentation over the western Papuan region, and increasing marine influence both northwards and eastwards. This stable environment remained until about the end of the Cretaceous. Further south, the break-up of the continental margin led to the formation of the Coral Sea in the Late Cretaceous and Early Palaeocene (65 Ma - 55 Ma). Thermal bulging, within the Papuan Basin, resulted in erosion of previously deposited sediments and led to restricted sedimentation during the Palaeocene. Block faulting of the basement was common on an orthogonal set of faults trending northeast-southwest and northwest-southeast. Widespread sedimentation returned to the Papuan Basin in the Middle to Late Eocane with the deposition of shallow marine carbonates over the Fly platform. The final breakup of Gondwanaland also commenced during the Eocene. This led to northeasterly movement of the Indo-Australian Plate, bringing it into collision with the northwesterly migrating Pacific Plate. A micro-plate complex developed in the collision zone. After an hiatus spanning most of the Oligocene, carbonate sedimentation recommenced on the Fly Platform in Miocene times. To the north and east, however, sedimentation became increasingly influenced by the adjacent island arc development. Continued convergence of the plates led to the formation of the Papuan Fold Belt and Aure Tectonic Belt, and the areal restriction of sedimentation in the Papuan Basin. Hydrocarbon discoveries have been made in Mesozoic clastic and Tertiary carbonate reservoirs. The source is from Mesozoic shales with a possible contribution also from Miocene age sediments. With the exception of two hydrocarbon discoveries in reefs (Pasca, Uramu), all other discoveries are from imbricate, thrust-faulted anticlines which formed during the Late Miocene to Pliocene. Potential also exists for hydrocarbon accumulations within the less deformed sediments of the Fly Platform." @default.
