- W2413703497 abstract "Chromosome studies of 5 intersex sheep which were known to be either co-twin, triplet or quadruplet to male lambs, have established that permanent white blood cell chimaerism occurred in these sheep. This fact verified that they were freemartins and that the freemartiu condition could be diagnosed reliably in sheep by the examination of chromosomes from cultured leucocytes. Similar studies on a sixth case in the absence of a history, identified it as a freemartin sheep. Chromosome studies on cells from 3 different tissues of 4 of these animals showed that only female cell lines were present and that the 4 sheep were, therefore, genetic females. This point was also verified from sex chromatin studies on 5 of the freemartin sheep, but the incidence on scorable sex chromatin bodies differed significantly from that seen in normal ewes. There was no correlation between the percentage of male cells (XY) as seen in repeated blood cultures from any of the freemartin sheep and the degree of virilization of the genitalia. Repeated blood cultures showed highly variable numbers of male cells which were considered to be associated with culture conditions. The anatomy of the genitalia of the freemartin sheep varied between a “male type” and a “female type” and there was a close correlation between this and the external genitalia as shown by the presence of a glans clitoris and the descent of the gonads. Histologically, the gonads of the freemartin sheep were similar to the bovine freemartin, sex cords were present in each of the gonads in close accordance with the degree of masculinization of the genitalia. No body comparable to an ovarian follicle was seen in any of them. From a comparison with recorded cases of bovine freemartins and also in view of the 4 “female type” freemartins recorded in this study, it is suggested that convert freemartinism is probably more common in the sheep than has been suspected previously." @default.
