- W2413860123 abstract "Recently Social Forces published two significant contribufions to occupational prestige research. Balkwell, Bates, and Garbin (BBG) sought to test a key assumption in the status attainment research tradition, namely, the intersubjectivity of occupational prestige evaluations. Kraus, Schild, and Hodge (KSH) took up a similar question, asking whether occupational prestige were rooted in the collective conscience or whether they were figments of the sociological imagination. Both pieces claimed that consensus pervaded respondent gradings of occupational prestige. In this note I argue that consensus, or status consciousness, has not been decisively demonstrated. Neither BBG, nor KSH, have satisfactorily shown that parallel conceptions or shared evaluations of occupational prestige adequately describe levels of agreement among prestige judges.1 I present a brief account of an alternative theoretical interpretation for prestige results, followed by a methodological reason for being suspicious of previous tests of the consensus assumption, and I conclude by presenting some preliminary evidence consistent with the alternative theoretical position." @default.
