- W2414147248 abstract "In this chapter we have tried to indicate the complexity of immune regulation and the multiple mechanisms by which suppressor functions may be induced. Such suppressor function appears to be mediated by molecules found in or released from cells. In addition, preliminary information suggests that suppressor function may ultimately be understood in terms of the same regulatory molecules that mediate other biological functions, namely the a'denyl cyclase-cyclic AMP-prostaglandin system. A number of lymphopoietic disorders are associated with abnormalities of suppressor function. Loss of suppressor function has not been established as the primary event in any, but in some it appears to be an early event and in others a disease-perpetuating mechanism. In many instances, loss of suppressor function leads to excessive lymphoid cell proliferation and may contribute to both viral activation and lymphoproliferative disorders. At the other end of the spectrum, excessive suppressor function is associated with hypogammaglobulinaemia in some patients. Thus excessive suppressor function can impair immune responsiveness selectively. There are probably semiindependent regulatory mechanisms for different types of T cells and for the ultimate expression of different types of immunoglobulins. There may exist a state of excessive suppressor activity with regard to one function and impaired activity with regard to another function. Careful dissection of the mechanisms involved in different lymphopoietic disorders hopefully will lead to specific modes of therapy for these diseases." @default.
