In bladder base and body, respectively, the concentration (pmol./mg. wet weight) of norepinephrine was 23.4 and 2.16, of acetylcholine was 26.7 and 18.3, and of choline was 96.7 and 199. The activity (nmol./mg. protein/hour) of tyrosine hydroxylase was 422 and less than 50, of monoamine oxidase was 80.6 and 126, of choline acetyltransferase was 17.4 and 11.5, and of acetylcholinesterase (nmol./mg. wet weight/hour) was 485 and 165. Treatment with α-methyl-p-tyrosine did not alter norepinephrine concentration in bladder base but decreased it by 27% in bladder body. Studies were also done to determine whether age-related changes exist in the adrenergic and cholinergic neurochemistry of the rat urinary bladder. Bladders from rats of 6–7, 15–17, and 22–24 mo. of age were examined. The only age-related differences noted were a progressive decrease in level of monoamine oxidase activity in both bladder regions and an increase in bladder base norepinephrine concentration from 6–7 to 15–17 mo. followed by a decrease at 22–24 mo. Overall, the results show marked regional variations in bladder neurochemistry which remain remarkably stable as the animals grow old. © 1988 by The American Urological Association Education and Research, Inc.FiguresReferencesRelatedDetailsCited ByGomez-Pinilla P, Gomez M, Hedlund P, Swärd K, Hellstrand P, Camello P, Pozo M and Andersson K (2018) Effect of Melatonin on Age Associated Changes in Guinea Pig Bladder FunctionJournal of Urology, VOL. 177, NO. 4, (1558-1561), Online publication date: 1-Apr-2007.Dmitrieva N (2018) Increased α1-Adrenergic Activity in the Rat Bladder by Depletion of Ovarian HormonesJournal of Urology, VOL. 178, NO. 6, (2677-2682), Online publication date: 1-Dec-2007.Persson K, Steers W and Tuttle J (2018) Regulation of Nerve Growth Factor Secretion in Smooth Muscle Cells Cultured from Rat Bladder Body, Base and UrethraJournal of Urology, VOL. 157, NO. 5, (2000-2006), Online publication date: 1-May-1997.Ishigooka M and Nakada T (2018) Analysis of Regional Norepinephrine Content in the Rabbit Bladder after Acute Electrical Pelvic Floor StimulationJournal of Urology, VOL. 150, NO. 1, (235-238), Online publication date: 1-Jul-1993.Nakamura I, Takahashi C and Miyagawa I (2018) The Alterations of Norepinephrine and Acetylcholine Concentrations in Immature Rat Urinary Bladder Caused by Streptozotocin-Induced DiabetesJournal of Urology, VOL. 148, NO. 2 Part 1, (423-426), Online publication date: 1-Aug-1992.Malmgren A, Andersson P and Uvelius B (2018) Bladder Function in Rats with Short- and Long-Term Diabetes; Effects of Age and Muscarinic BlockadeJournal of Urology, VOL. 142, NO. 6, (1608-1614), Online publication date: 1-Dec-1989.
