- W2414796195 abstract "Coronary heart disease (CHD) is the leading cause of disability in American women over the age of50. It is clear that women are at risk; while mortality rates in the general population have decreased considerably over the past 3 decades, rates for women, particu larly African-American women, have gone down much more slowly. Despite the limited amount of research specific to the needs of women during recovery and rehabilitation, it appea rs that women who experience a cardiac event face unique physiologic and psychosocial issues. Cardiovascu lar nurses must begin to consider physiologi c and psychosocial issues central to the rehabilitation and recovery of women as part of a process that begins in the critical care unit and extends to patient and family needs within the community. This article reviews and summarizes the literature on rehabilitation and recovery in women who have experienced a cardiac event. This article also includes an overview of physiologic and psychosocial issues specific to rehabilitation and recovery in women with cardiovascular disease." @default.
