- W2414929962 abstract "Writing about the doctor’s duties has a long tradition in Western medicine, reaching back in principle to the Hippocratic Corpus and, within it, especially to the Hippocratic Oath (c. 400 bc).1 In many periods, such writing has been employed not only to provide ethical guidance for medical practitioners, but also to demarcate their conduct from that of other (often rival) healers and to introduce young doctors to forms of ‘prudent’ behaviour vis-à-vis patients, medical colleagues and other practitioners, and the wider public.2 The art of acting prudently, in order to build up a successful medical practice, was especially cultivated in the savoir faire (know how) literature of the Enlightenment, from Friedrich Hoffmann’s Medicus Politicus (Latin 1738, German 1752), via John Gregory’s Lectures on the Duties and Qualifications of a Physician (1772, German 1778) and Wilhelm Gottfried Ploucquet’s Der Arzt (1797), to Thomas Percival’s Medical Ethics (1803) and Christoph Wilhelm Hufeland’s essay ‘Die Verhältnisse des Arztes’ (1806).3 As Iris Ritzmann has recently argued, this type of advice literature was meant to help young practitioners cope with uncertainty and insecurity, in a time when the therapies of academic medicine still had little more to offer than the various empirical treatments of other healers.4" @default.
