- W2415703776 abstract "The great physician Sir William Osler said, “To study the phenomenon of disease without books is to sail an uncharted sea, while to study books without patients is not to go to sea at all.” Today, the practice of Medicine has “evolved” to where physicians study books, but more often, online sources of information, and to where detailed histories and physical examinations have been replaced by CT scans and other imaging modalities. As a result, the art of patient-physician interaction is floundering, and physicians are becoming more comfortable with scanned or endoscopic imagery than they are with the words of the patient and the findings elicited by the examining hand. Alas, the art of the history and physical examination is a dying one. The purpose of this column, which will be published periodically throughout the year, is to try to reinvigorate the readership to appreciate how useful these art forms are and to stimulate our striving once again to master them. Touching is known to be the oldest and most effective act of doctors, and it is an intrinsic part of the “soft” art of healing and the practice of the compassionate physician. I hope this column, “Pages from Medical History: The Art of History and Physical Examination,” prompts us to evolve from what has become a “Medicine of Strangers,” in which regulations and guidelines typify the doctor-patient relationship, to a “Medicine of Friends,” in which trust, friendship, meaningful conversation, and the application of a knowledgeable, reassuring, examining hand regain their dominance—as in the “glory days” of Medicine, also known as “the days of the giants.” Let's all try to become giants!" @default.
