Fetuses with posterior urethral valves had increased muscle thickness (1.7 ± 0.3 versus 0.9 ± 0.2mm.) and a slightly increased ratio of connective tissue (38 ± 6 versus 31 ± 7%). Those with the prune belly syndrome fell into 2 groups: 1 had anatomical evidence of obstruction, increased muscle thickness and a normal ratio of connective tissue (2.2 ± 6mm. and 28 ± 9%), while 1 had no evidence of obstruction and thin bladders with increased connective tissue (0.8 ± 0.4mm. and 45 ± 12%). These results suggest that the phenotypic appearance of the prune belly syndrome may result from either a mesenchymal defect or urinary tract obstruction. © 1990 by The American Urological Association Education and Research, Inc.FiguresReferencesRelatedDetailsCited ByWu C, Thiruchelvam N, Sui G, Woolf A, Cuckow P and Fry C (2018) Ca2+ Regulation in Detrusor Smooth Muscle From Ovine Fetal Bladder After In Utero Bladder Outflow ObstructionJournal of Urology, VOL. 177, NO. 2, (776-780), Online publication date: 1-Feb-2007.Ziylan O, Oktar T, Ander H, Korgali E, Rodoplu H and Kocak T (2018) The Impact of Late Presentation of Posterior Urethral Valves on Bladder and Renal FunctionJournal of Urology, VOL. 175, NO. 5, (1894-1897), Online publication date: 1-May-2006.Nyirady P, Thiruchelvam N, Fry C, Godley M, Winyard P, Peebles D, Woolf A and Cuckow P (2018) Effects of In Utero Bladder Outflow Obstruction on Fetal Sheep Detrusor Contractility, Compliance and InnervationJournal of Urology, VOL. 168, NO. 4 Part 1, (1615-1620), Online publication date: 1-Oct-2002.SMEULDERS N, WOOLF A and WILCOX D (2018) SMOOTH MUSCLE DIFFERENTIATION AND CELL TURNOVER IN MOUSE DETRUSOR DEVELOPMENTJournal of Urology, VOL. 167, NO. 1, (385-390), Online publication date: 1-Jan-2002.GONZÁLEZ R, De FILIPPO R, JEDNAK R and BARTHOLD J (2018) URETHRAL ATRESIA: LONG-TERM OUTCOME IN 6 CHILDREN WHO SURVIVED THE NEONATAL PERIODJournal of Urology, VOL. 165, NO. 6 Part 2, (2241-2244), Online publication date: 1-Jun-2001.DEVEAUD C, MACARAK E, KUCICH U, EWALT D, ABRAMS W and HOWARD P (2018) MOLECULAR ANALYSIS OF COLLAGENS IN BLADDER FIBROSISJournal of Urology, VOL. 160, NO. 4, (1518-1527), Online publication date: 1-Oct-1998.Kajbafzadeh A, Quinn F, Duffy P and Ransley P (2018) Augmentation Cystoplasty in Boys with Posterior Urethral ValvesJournal of Urology, VOL. 154, NO. 2, (874-877), Online publication date: 1-Aug-1995.Kim K, Kogan B, Massad C and Huang Y (2018) Collagen and Elastin in the Normal Fetal BladderJournal of Urology, VOL. 146, NO. 2 Part 2, (524-527), Online publication date: 1-Aug-1991.Kim K, Kogan B, Massad C and Huang Y (2018) Collagen and Elastin in the Obstructed Fetal BladderJournal of Urology, VOL. 146, NO. 2 Part 2, (528-531), Online publication date: 1-Aug-1991.
