- W2417502955 abstract "Social integration, social stability, and relative freedom from social disruption and stress have been widely recognized as contributing to positive psychological well being. (Lowenthal, 1984; Larson, 1978; Pearlin and Johnson, 1977; Hughes and Gove, 1981; Kushman and Lane, 1980) [1] Type of living arrangements is a structured social situation which has a direct impact on social integration, stability, disruption, and stress and has been found to be associated with sense of well-being, (Hughes and Gove, 1981) Recent trends in later age? at first marriage, increased rates of marital dissolution, and persistent premature mortality for men in comparison with women?have contributed to increased numbers of adults in the United States who are not married and who are either living alone or with someone other than a spouse. Approximately 30 percent of the U.S. population over the age of 19 are not married with approximately 50 percent of persons in their 20s and those over 75 not married. For persons over the age of 65, considerably more women (63%) than men (25%) are not living with a spouse. The number of families not maintained by a married couple doubled between 1970 and 1984. (U.S. Bureau of the Census, 1984) There is considerable evidence to suggest that persons who are married and living with a spouse tend to have higher levels of well-being than those in other marital statuses. (Gove, 1972;" @default.
