To prevent this side effect, selective activation of the bladder without activation of the urethral sphincter by selective stimulation of sacral roots was studied in a canine animal model. On-line registration of bladder, urethral and rectal pressure was performed, and EMG of tail muscles and urethral sphincter was recorded. After laminectomy, intradural left and right sacral root S2 were stimulated with a tripolar cuff electrode. A self-made stimulator generating adjustable pulse shapes was used. Using 200μsec. rectangular pulses, contraction of bladder and urethral sphincter could be elicited. Selective activation of the bladder occurred with pulses of 600 to 800μsec. due to anodal blocking of the large nerve fibers in the sacral roots. During acute animal experiments we were able to achieve selective activation of the detrusor without simultaneous activation of the external urethral sphincter, and complete, low-pressure voiding occurred. © 1994 by The American Urological Association Education and Research, Inc.FiguresReferencesRelatedDetailsCited ByBRAUN P, BOSCHERT J, BROSS S, SCHEEPE J, ALKEN P and JUENEMANN P (2018) TAILORED LAMINECTOMY: A NEW TECHNIQUE FOR NEUROMODULATOR IMPLANTATIONJournal of Urology, VOL. 162, NO. 5, (1607-1609), Online publication date: 1-Nov-1999.SHAKER H, TU L, ROBIN S, ARABI K, HASSOUNA M, SAWAN M and ELHILALI M (2018) REDUCTION OF BLADDER OUTLET RESISTANCE BY SELECTIVE SACRAL ROOT STIMULATION USING HIGH-FREQUENCY BLOCKADE IN DOGS: AN ACUTE STUDYJournal of Urology, VOL. 160, NO. 3 Part 1, (901-907), Online publication date: 1-Sep-1998.Rijkhoff N, Wijkstra H, Van Kerrebroeck P and Debruyne F (2018) Selective Detrusor Activation By Electrical Sacral Nerve Root Stimulation in Spinal Cord InjuryJournal of Urology, VOL. 157, NO. 4, (1504-1508), Online publication date: 1-Apr-1997.
