Particular to the machine are lack of radiation exposure, no need for anesthesia, a purely outpatient procedure, no electrocardiographic problems, a high degree of safety and a paucity of complications. The equipment is described briefly. The same machine currently is being used to destroy renal and biliary stones. The results are encouraging and highly comparable to the initial experience with the earlier machines. Fragmentation rates are approximately 86%, with destruction rates of 63.4% over-all. Ultrasound localization and monitoring proved surprisingly easy to learn and were increasingly less of a problem as experience was gained. No serious complications were observed, and there were no renal losses and no deaths. Only 3 cases of steinstrasse were noted among 461 with 633 stones targeted during 595 treatments. © 1989 by The American Urological Association Education and Research, Inc.FiguresReferencesRelatedDetailsCited byBruce Robertson J, Koch M, Kirchner F and Smith J (2018) Suboptimal Treatment Results with the Therasonics LithotriptorJournal of Urology, VOL. 152, NO. 2 Part 1, (317-319), Online publication date: 1-Aug-1994.Fegan J, Camp L, Wilson W, Miller G and Preminger G (2018) Treatment Philosophy and Retreatment Rates Following Piezoelectric LithotripsyJournal of Urology, VOL. 149, NO. 1, (12-14), Online publication date: 1-Jan-1993.Wang Y, Grenabo L, Hedelin H, Pettersson S, Wikholm G and Zachrisson B (2018) Analysis of Stone Fragility in Vitro and in Vivo With Piezoelectric Shock Waves Using the Edap LT-01Journal of Urology, VOL. 149, NO. 4, (699-702), Online publication date: 1-Apr-1993.Swanson S, Larson T, Begun F, Lamm D, Fuchs E, Hyman J and Huffman J (2018) Clinical Trials of the Northgate SD-3 Dual-Purpose Lithotriptor for Renal CalculiJournal of Urology, VOL. 148, NO. 3 Part 2, (1047-1051), Online publication date: 1-Sep-1992.Talati J, Shah T, Memon A, Memon R, Sidhwa M, Adil S and Omair A (2018) Extracorporeal Shock Wave Lithotripsy for Urinary Tract Stones Using MPL 9000 Spark Gap Technology and Ultrasound MonitoringJournal of Urology, VOL. 146, NO. 6, (1482-1486), Online publication date: 1-Dec-1991.Chul Kim S, Hwan Oh C, Tae Moon Y and Do Kim K (2018) Treatment of Steinstrasse with Repeat Extracorporeal Shock Wave Lithotripsy: Experience with Piezoelectric LithotriptorJournal of Urology, VOL. 145, NO. 3, (489-491), Online publication date: 1-Mar-1991.Cope R, Middleton R and Smith J (2018) A 2-year Experience with the Wolf Piezoelectric Lithotriptor: Impact of Repeat Treatment On Results and ComplicationsJournal of Urology, VOL. 145, NO. 6, (1141-1144), Online publication date: 1-Jun-1991.
