- W2418842953 abstract "The French chemist Lavoisier is not only known as the father of chemistry for his successes in making chemical experimental procedures quantitative. From his point of view, quantification was only one small, although necessary, part in the more general project of perfecting the science of chemistry by perfecting its language. Throughout his career his touchstone, as far as theories of language and knowledge were concerned, was the Logique of Condillac. Citing Condillac at great length in the Methode de nomenclature chymique , which he presented with a group of highly respected chemists to the Academie des Sciences in 1787 and in the ensuing Traite elementaire de chimie , Lavoisier opened fire on the then-entrenched phlogistonists and their theory of a metaphorical, chemistry of principles.1 He did this precisely by proposing an entirely new and very simplified chemical language consisting only of a nomenclature and some very simple rules a sort of rudimentary grammar for the combinations of the terms. Along with the new nomenclature he presented a table for translating the old words into what he called their equivalent terms in the new. The Academy of Sciences reacted rather poorly to Lavoisier's proposals,2 realizing that behind the straightforward and minimal new terminology lay the total abandonment of the phlogiston theory not only as a chemical system, but also as an epistemological model for reading the natural world. We will come back to a more detailed explanation of some of the philosophical assumptions of the phlogiston theory later; for the moment it will suffice to point out that the savants of the Academy were perfectly aware that Lavoisier was only acting as a good ideologue when he attempted to provoke a revolution in his science by using a reform in its nomenclature." @default.
