- W2419084811 abstract "Chlorine has been used for many years as a wastewater disinfectant, and the toxicity of chlorinated wastewater is well documented.1' 2 Recently bromine chloride has been considered as a possible alternate method of disinfecting wastewater,35 hut knowledge of the toxicity of chlorobrominated effluent to aquatic life was limited to static, acute toxicity tests with fat head minnows in chlorobrominated effluent.6 More recent research by the authors, which was conducted using a flow-through system, showed that although chlorobrominated effluent was toxic to some types of aquatic life, it was considerably less toxic than chlorinated effluent.7 While conducting acute and life cycle tox icity studies, it was noticed that if total residual chlorine (trc) or total residual bromine chlo ride (trbc) levels were relatively low initially and then gradually increased, fish seemed to be able to tolerate higher residual levels than they would have been able to tolerate without previous exposure. In other words, they seemed to be able to acclimate to the trc or trbc in the effluent. Past research has indi cated that fish are able to acclimate to changes in water temperature89 and dissolved oxygen (do) concentrations,10 although extremes of either parameter can be lethal. Because no data were available concerning the ability of fish to acclimate to trc or trbc in effluent, several experiments were conducted to test this possibility. The objectives were: 1. to determine if fathead minnows and lake trout previously exposed to sublethal levels of trc and trbc in effluent were able to acclimate and survive in effluent having levels of trc or trbc above their respective 96-hour TL50 values; 2. to determine the maximum level of trc in effluent that fathead minnows can toler ate for 7 days after previous exposure to sub lethal trc levels; and 3. to determine relation ships between acclimation time, concentrations of TRC during acclimation, and degree of ac climation achieved by fathead minnows. Since these tests were conducted as a sup plement to higher priority research, the authors were not able to explore this phenomenon as completely as would have been desirable. However, it seemed that the previously un reported nature of this data made any in formation that could be obtained worthwhile." @default.
