- W2419284306 abstract "During the early 1860s, the fashion for Turkish baths flourished, and the pages of The Lancet recorded a lively debate about whether the baths offered any real benefit to health. Some contributors had direct experience of the original, oriental baths, and had no doubt about their superiority: “I have taken Turkish baths at Constantinople, Cairo, and Damascus, and I have, therefore been shampooed … in the gentlest, quietest, and most patient manner possible; and I protest against the tremendous energy with which the poor human body is thumped and battered and crushed by some of the shampooers in our public Turkish baths.” This was the view of Dr E J Tilt, who wrote in support of the Turkish bath but warned against possible dangers, including high temperatures exceeding 170° F. He advocated the appointment of “an inspector of public baths—a medical man, of course,” and warned that “if this officer is not soon at work, coroners will have plenty to do” (Jan 12, 1861, p 47)." @default.
