- W2419579302 abstract "The findings from three small separate studies were used to examine hip protector use in 74 Finnish institutions for the aged. These three studies included a postal survey to 100 health centres or homes for the aged where external hip protectors had been requested, two comparative studies comparing users of hip protectors (n=6) and not (n=6) in two care homes in Turku City, and a single care home (Kustaankaratano) (n=34). A 71 per cent response rate was achieved in the postal survey. Findings indicated that most residents (60 per cent) regularly used hip protectors in the day, but few indicated nighttime use (22 per cent). Of the improvements suggested, flexibility and material were most frequently mentioned (66 per cent). In the comparative studies one hip fracture occurred among the 49 falls reported in residents wearing hip protectors, compared to eight fractures in the control subjects following 73 falls. Compliance rates ‘of regular use’ (41 per cent) were reported for the Kustaankaratano care home. The authors assert from the findings of the three studies that compliance was attributed to whether a nurse or a physician advocated hip protector use (the latter being more effective), residents’ familiarity with the hip protector and its appearance and comfort. Again, no published data on these findings was presented." @default.
