- W2422907062 abstract "Pakistan and the resulting emergence of Bangladesh in 1971, the US retreat from Indochina followed by a steady reduction in its military presence in East Asia and the increasing Soviet influence there have completely upset the balance of power in this part of the world. Faced with the above-mentioned developments the pro-West countries in the region began reassessing their policies to adjust to the emerging geo-political realities. Being strategically located, Pakistan and Indonesia could not remain oblivious of the rapidly changing situation. In view of its alignment with the West, the process of policy reversal was, however, more apparent in Pakistan than it was in Indonesia. Beginning with the withdrawal from SEATO, Pakistan's policy review took a decisive turn when it left CENTO and joined the non-aligned club. Non-aligned Indonesia, on the other hand, intensified its efforts to promote regional cooperation through the ASEAN. Given the reassessed goals set by the political strategists of the two states for staying out of the super powers' rivalry, for reducing their economic dependence on the industrialized West and for Muslim and Third World unity, their relations have assumed new significance in the prevailing situation. The presence of Soviet military forces in Afghanistan, on the one hand, and the US move to deploy the Rapid Deployment Force (RDF) in the Gulf on the other, has created security problems for the states in the region. Unless the countries close their ranks and plan a joint strategy to ward off the involvement of outside powers in the area, the region would continue to be a hotbed of super powers rivalry and competition. In the face of new challenges of the eighties, the long standing friendship between Pakistan and Indonesia is indeed a souroe of comfort to both." @default.
