- W242316150 abstract "The bank's fourth-quarter reports are in and the assembled managers are apprehensive. Will this quarter's results be as pathetic as the first three? The income statement is a pleasant surprise-the net has risen from a $400,000 loss in the previous quarter to a gain of $1.2 million. Better still, ROA and ROE have gone from very negative to very positive. This is an abnormal jump in eamings. But then, this is not your normal bank. The institution is being run completely by three bank employees-an operations manager, a financial analyst, and a training manager-as well as a bank examiner and a trade magazine editor The bank, along with its community, is a product of ABA's BankExec software. It's been running for three days at a recent bank performance achievement seminar sponsored by the New York chapter of the American Institute of Banking. About the program. Unlike its predecessor, the well-known BankSim, and some other simulation models, BankExec runs on IBM-compatible personal computers. These are usually easier to come by than are mainframes. The BankExec simulation is also on a smaller scale. One of the things I like about this program is that I can get my hands around it, says John Dory, the AIB course instructor and a professor at Pace University, N.Y BankExec's simulated bank can offer only six loan products and students aren't overburdened with details. They also don't need a lot of real-bank experience to participate. The simulation can serve as the last phase of a management training program or as an introduction to banking for professionals who have never worked in a bank before. Up to eight student-run banks can compete with one another in the community BankExec creates. The managing each institution is given quar terly financial statements as well as national interest rates for each period of the simulation. Each quarter, they make critical decisions: the student teams buy and sell securities; maintain capital levels; and set budgets, rates, and fees for loan and deposit products. When all these decisions have been made on paper, they are keyed into BankExec. The program calculates the results of the decisions versus its built-in economy and the decisions of competing banks. Then it prints out the bank's statements for the next quarter This processing takes about five minutes per bank. The BankExec program can be purchased by a bank and taught in-house, or employees can be sent to an AIB seminar. Meanwhile, at the bank. The AIB seminar I attended moved rapidly-five quarters passed in three days. My named its bank C&C Trust-Commercial & Consumer, or vice-versa, depending on who we're talking to, said the training manager on our team. C&C Trust's management had a mix of backgrounds and capabilities. The examiner-from the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency-was the group's acknowledged expert on investments and banking in general. However, he let the rest of the team learn some things through trial and error. The training manager claimed to have no financial experience-but later took a strong hand in running the bank. She was good at finding a way to do something and following it through. For example, when we needed to set budgets, she was able to figure out how much market share we needed and then how many new accounts we needed, and work her way from there. Neither the operations manager nor the financial analyst had ever dealt with asset/liability management in a bank before, but they picked it up quickly and contributed a great deal. Instructor John Dory told us the banks with the best group dynamics would perform best. Our may have been too dynamic-we spent much more time debating each decision than the other groups did, and ended up with the poorest results. Perhaps we learned more in the process. …" @default.
