One of the challenges in writing any type of history - even that of such inherently glamorous topics as war and the presidency - is to make the topic absorbing while still providing facts, background, and context. Lively writing will always lure readers, but while fact can indeed be stranger than fiction, presenting facts in a fascinating way that sustains reader interest can be difficult for any author. So it is understandable that author Susan Hertog decided to write a duo biography of two once-famous journalists of the same era, focusing on the personal lives of the women rather than on their accomplishments. Neither West nor Dorothy Thompson would ever be mistaken for Snow White; their lives were full of extra-marital affairs, excessive drinking, estrangement from their children, and other activities that have long provided the raw material of soap operas. Still, while the book Dangerous Ambition is engaging in parts, it raises more questions than answers. Overall, the book focuses on the personal lives of these two women with their tremendous professional successes and the times in which they lived forming the background. It is a variation on the theme of most biographies of well known historical, literary, or artistic figures, which usually focus on professional lives with personal lives forming a backdrop. While this might have been done to make the book palatable to a wide group of readers, this approach does not work in this case. First, it is a stretch to combine the lives of these two journalists, even though they are both women who lived in the same era. Second, the reader all but misses the pivotal events and circumstances in their lives that made them famous. Thompson was the first woman to head a foreign news bureau, a foreign correspondent, and later a radio commentator. West was a literary critic and novelist. The author does not provide enough historical context and in many cases glosses over interesting aspects of their professional lives. And while the two women were friends and their lives intersected, the type of writing that they practiced was quite different, and they rarely saw each other. Hertog takes pains to compare their personalities and their thoughts throughout the book, but the comparison often seems strained. For instance, Rebecca and Dorothy were equally controlling, but unlike Rebecca, Dorothy's demeanor was neither Machiavellian nor punitive.
