- W242469038 abstract "In 1983, Kathleen Fraser began a small journal of innovative women's poetics called HOW(ever). It ran through 1992 and in 1999 was reinvented as the online journal HOW2, explicitly committed extending HOW(ever)'s original spirit of inquiry into modernist and contemporary innovative writing practices by (HOW2). HOW2 includes not only innovative poetry by women but also critical scholarship, informal exchanges between readers and editors, self-reflective essays on the journal's mission, and archives of past issues of both HOW2 and HOW(ever). Fraser explains in Tradition of Marginality that HOW(ever) was meant fill a gap in poetic circles: Much experimental poetry by women was rejected by male-dominated journals and publishers, but the women-based journals that arose from the feminist movement tended call for the immediately accessible language of personal experience as a binding voice of women's (31). Thus, HOW(ever)'s purpose was not to displace or replace anything or anyone but instead be an added source of information and stimulation for poets and scholars (36). HOW2's launch into cyberspace is just one example of an embracing of technology by those involved in teaching and writing, feminism and women's studies. The new and developing online format is full of opportunities for those interested in exploring and challenging traditional forms and institutions. Lyn Hejinian's description of the open text highlights the ways arrangement and rearrangement can affect a text's reception: It [the open text] invites participation, rejects authority of the writer over the reader and thus, by analogy, the authority implicit in other (social, economic, cultural) hierarchies. It speaks for writing that is generative rather than directive .... The open text often emphasizes or foregrounds process .... and thus resists the cultural tendencies that seek identify and fix material and turn it into a product; that is, it resists reduction and commodification. (43) HOW2 exemplifies the open text, and in doing so, it suggests that the internet format can contribute the feminist challenging of traditional hierarchies by allowing more inclusiveness and encouraging a dialogue between reader and writer. The temptation that comes with the online form, however, is try make feminist endeavors all things all people; after all, internet journals are potentially available anyone, and feminism can only grow and prosper from the inclusion of different voices. Yet HOW2, eclectic though it is, neither appeals everyone nor can be accessed by everyone; like all journals, factors of time, class, and education affect readership and contributions. The greatest strength of HOW2, then, may be its own acknowledgment of its limitations-and in this it can provide a sound model for other feminist online ventures. The dynamics-the impossibilities-of the feminist online journal are what interest us. We have taken a bit of a critical adventure in order help us discover through performance what HOW2 and similar journals stand gain and lose, not only in terms of the online format but also in attention space and form, the juxtaposition of poetry and scholarship, the use of biographical notes, and the combination of formal and informal modes of writing. …" @default.
