- W2425150712 abstract "Arthur Smith Woodward (ASW; 1864–1944) FRS joined the British Museum (Natural History) at the age of 18 and rose to be Keeper of Geology. He was a distinguished expert on fossil vertebrates, particularly the fishes. Many of the papers in Arthur Smith Woodward … were first read at a 150th birthday celebration in May 2014. I sadly missed this and am delighted to catch up with that meeting's spirit by reading the resulting volume. This book is produced in the attractive style of Geological Society Special Publications with a particularly eye-catching cover, deep red with the head of a Chalk fish. It is divided into an introductory chapter, a shorter historical section (five chapters) and a longer look at ASW's science, its relevance today and how our ideas (and techniques) have changed or remained the same (13 chapters). The book is particularly well illustrated, many diagrams and photographs appearing in colour. The index appears adequate. I shall comment on a few chapters, picking those that I particularly enjoyed. The editors provide brief summaries of the rest of the chapters in the introduction, supported by an ASW bibliography. Of the historical chapters, Angela Milner's ‘Lady Smith Woodward's tablecloth’ was particularly fascinating, giving potted introductions to almost all of the 342 signatories on this unique relic. ‘Smith Woodward's ideas on fish classification’ by the late Peter Forey is a welcome summary for non-experts. As no more than a dabbler in palaeoichthyology, I enjoyed the disparate strands pulled together by the many papers on some of ASW's favourite fishes. From these I pick ‘The English Chalk and London Clay: two remarkable British bony fish Lagerstätten’ by Friedman et al. as being particularly eye opening; it is the sort of contribution to inspire keen collectors back into the field. ‘Arthur Smith Woodward and his involvement in the study of human evolution’ (Dean et al.) provided two pieces of information that were new to me: that ASW was a supporter of the eolith agenda (p. 325), and Lady Smith Woodward thought her husband regarded the Piltdown 2 site as a figment of Charles Dawson's imagination (p. 329), contra Woodward in White (1926, p. 67). This leads me to my one minor criticism of this fine volume. ‘Yet it is the Piltdown debacle … that has defined [ASW's] public reputation’ (p. 41) is typical of comments made in several chapters on Piltdown Man. This was shown to be a forgery after ASW's death, but he was not the forger. He was successful in describing and interpreting the collection of scraps of skull and jaw provided by Charles Dawson. He never found another fragment of Piltdown Man after Dawson's death in 1916, but continued to collect the type locality after his retirement in 1924 and into his 70s, until blindness kept him from the field. I salute ASW for his perseverance and do not criticize him for failing to spot a skilful forgery which fooled, not just him, but the entire British palaeoanthropological establishment. I recommend this book to vertebrate palaeontologists of all persuasions and historians of science. Reading it left me with a warm feeling towards this distinguished palaeontologist, much of whose work remains relevant at the present day." @default.
