- W2425701075 abstract "the factors that determine them has provided a theoretical basis for the control of algal blooms in lakes. Knowledge of the relationships between nutrient inputs and algal populations has led to the devel opment of nutrient control practices for the management of lake problems. Much less is known about streams, particularly in the agricultural regions of the midwestern U. S. Basic studies of the factors control ling algal populations in these waters are needed, along with basic information on the levels of suspended algae and plant nutrients. Recent studies of the Iowa and Des Moines Rivers 13 have indicated that the levels of phosphorus and nitrogen com pounds are relatively high and that high levels of suspended algae are common. The authors extended these studies to a larger sample of Iowa streams. The spe cific objectives were to determine the levels of suspended algae and plant nutrients in central Iowa streams and to determine the relationships between the algal concentra tions and the physical and chemical proper ties of these streams. Sampling stations were established on all major streams and some smaller streams within a radius of about 50 miles (80 km) of Ames, Iowa; 16 stations on 14 streams were used. The landscape is gently rolling and is used primarily for agricultural pur poses. Although there were several cities and towns within the drainage areas up stream from the sampling stations, sites immediately below centers of population were specifically avoided. Locations of the sampling stations and watershed char acteristics are given in Table I. ber, January, and February when most sta tions were frozen. Samples were collected weekly during June, July, and August and monthly during the autumn and spring. Surface samples were taken with a plas tic bucket suspended from a nylon line. Two samples were removed from the bucket sample, one in a standard 305-ml glass biochemical oxygen demand (bod) bottle for the nutrient analyses and the other in a 500-ml polyethylene bottle for the algal standing crop analyses. Samples in bod bottles were transported on ice to the laboratory, where chemical analyses were completed within 8 hr from the time of sampling. Orthophosphate phosphorus was mea sured with the stannous chloride method, ammonia nitrogen was determined by di rect Nesslerization, and nitrate nitrogen was measured by the cadmium reduction method. Prepared reagents were obtained from the Hach Chemical Company.4 Spe cific conductance was measured by using" @default.
