- W242578901 abstract "Prof. Dr. R. Nath and Ajay Nath, Monuments of Delhi (Architectural and Historical), 2nd revised edition, 2010, pbd. by Heritage Agra, Oshin paperbacks, art paper, pp. 130+44 illustrations and 58 inscriptions. Price not given. ISBN 81 85 105 33 2.The downfall of the Mughuls heralded an era of disintegration of the medieval society. There were hardly few among the people who were cognizant of the contemporary malaise and degradation. However, one such person was Syed Ahmed, the well known founder of M. A. O. College Aligarh and a pioneer of Muslim renaissance. A scion of an aristocratic family he had to face severe economic crunch by the early death of his father and hostility of darbar officials. He on his own, decided to find a job in the emerging administration of the East India Company, especially in the revenue department (1838). This association developed into a regular service leading finally to the post of a munsi/ (a sub-ordinate judge). An interesting development was his interest in history which might have been generated by living in Hadrat Shahjahanabad (Delhi) and Agra, the erstwhile Mughul capitals. This nostalgic sentiment led him to write Jam-i Jam, the chronological sketches of the Mughul royal house from Amir Timur to Bahadur Shah Zafar in Persian (1 840). On becoming munsi/ he was transferred to Fatehpur SIkri where he lived in the abandoned Khwabgah (bed room) of Akbar. Residence in those abundant splendid monuments of Sikri could have further motivated his interest in these remains. He came to Delhi in 1 846 and expressed his long cherished desire to put down on record the condition of the red fort and notable residences in the city of Delhi. In 1 846 he decided to do something about it. In spite of his meager income he started visiting these monuments in his spare time. It is said that when he decided to record the inscriptions of Qutb Minar he used to have himself raised with the help of a basket hanging on bamboos and logs. He measured all these monuments, noted down their inscriptions and conditions. Within one and a half year the first edition was ready with four chapters (1 847). The first chapter refers to 130 buildings, the 2nd mentions 32, the 3rd records 70. The fourth chapter gives some account of the people and climate of Delhi and 120 leading personages. The style is archaic Persianised Urdu. Syed himself realised that it needed revision which resulted in its 2nd edition in 1854. In this edition the account of Delhi's people and personalities was deleted, language was simplified and other improvements were made. However, during the War of Independence (1857) most of its copies were lost, but still some survived.Sir Syed named it Athar al-Sanadid. The book proved very useful for later scholars e.g. Alexander Cunningham, J. D. Beglar, Edward Thomas while M. Garcin de Tassey rendered it into French. Cunningham used it in his Report for the year 1862-1865. Beglar noted his report on Delhi, . …" @default.
