- W2425821437 abstract "Computational simulations of a bamboo charcoalization kiln for 12 minutes were performed in this study using FDS. Two cases were studied in this work, one being an empty kiln whereas the other is stuffed with bamboo bundles. The kiln walls were assumed concrete while the bamboo bundles were simulated using 20 cm x 20 cm x 20 cm cubic oak blocks. The chimney effect causes fresh air to be entrained from the front opening and hot air to be evacuated through the vertical exhaust pipe. Simulations show that the flow and temperature fields reach a quasi steady state after a fairly short amount of time. For an empty kiln, it takes approximately 100 sec. while the one stuffed with bamboo bundles only takes 50 sec. As soon as the kilns reach their quasi steady state, the temperature in the kiln increases linearly with time. The temperature everywhere within the empty kiln increases at the same rate. However, for the stuffed kiln, temperature in the decomposition room increases at the same rate but that in the exhaust pipe increases with a lower rate. Also, the temperature difference for the first 12 min. within the decomposition room can be as large as 350°C. Along the exhaust pipe, the temperature at the lower exhaust inlet is only slightly greater than that at the upper exhaust outlet. With the presence of bamboo bundles that absorb heat energy, the temperature is always greater for an empty kiln than for a kiln filled with bamboo bundles. To better simulate the process of bamboo charcoalization, not only is either the actual amount of heat release rate or temperature of the burning wooden fuel required, but also the thermal properties of bamboo must be specified." @default.
