- W2426716002 abstract "Texans are known colloquially for their generosity, for hearts as big as all outdoors, yet to date very little has been written on the subject of organized giving in the Lone Star State. Mary L. Kelley has assumed the task of examining the earliest private philanthropic foundations in Texas from 1920 to 1950. Foundations, she asserts, are private, nonprofit, granting institutions that manage and disseminate private funds for public gain. The formation of foundation activity followed four stages. The first period, from 1880 to 1910, saw the great industrialists of the age reflecting on the advice found in Andrew Carnegie's pamphlet Wealth (1889), which admonished the rich to consider philanthropic foundations for the public good. The second stage, from 1910 to 1930, saw the completion of these goals, and it was at this point that Tex-ans launched their own private foundations. The first Texas entrepreneur to follow Carnegie's “Gospel of Wealth” formula was George W. Brackenridge of San Antonio. In 1925, five years after his death, the trustees created the George W. Brackenridge Foundation largely for the education of white and black students." @default.
