- W2427995195 abstract "With the role of purchasing evolved from a paper pushing function to a strategicand value creating player in global businesses (Espich, 2004), the activities ofpurchasing professionals today are knowledge- and competence driven. Thepurpose of this study is to identify the competency needs of purchasingprofessionals at DFS Deutsche Flugsicherung GmbH (DFS), Europe’s largestAir Navigation Service Provider (ANSP). It also seeks to explore the role ofimplicit participant knowledge in the process of competency identification andmodel development. For these reasons, a mixed-method case study at DFS isconducted. After reviewing the literature, a purchasing competency model isdeveloped from scratch through exploring the target population’s self-imageon competency needs and by contrasting these results to the view ofpurchasing department’s internal customers and management. The sodeveloped model is then verified through participant observations and theidentification of the implicit knowledge of competency needs of purchasingprofessionals. The study contributes to business practice and the theory ofcompetency modeling. It identifies competencies in an area where little isknown about competency requirements and explores the need to considerimplicit participant knowledge in the model development process. Theresearch outcomes are valuable to solve a real-world problematic situationthrough developing an activity based, multi-perspective and future orientedcompetency model. The study provides an example of how the aspect ofimplicit knowledge can be integrated when studying competencies. Resultsfrom this case in Europe’s leading ANSP are likely to be transferrable to othercompanies in the industry." @default.
