- W2428853217 abstract "The heavy structural wood members of historic buildings, whether logs or other hewn or sawn timbers, frequently are subject to rot and insect attack. Once decay and insect damage has begun, traditional methods of controlling the spread of damage in large timbers have often been inadequate. Some preservative treatments leave objectionable residues, alter appearance and cannot be applied effectively to work that is in place. It has become common practice to substitute pressure preservative treated wood timbers and logs for unprotected wood when replacement of a damaged member is necessary and reconstruction is underway. Under severe exposure conditions, the untreated core of pressure preservative treated timbers becomes infected and replacement is again necessary. Several methods of restoring the structural and cosmetic qualities of rot and insect damaged wood members have been developed in recent years. Carvable epoxy resin fillers, the APT-W.E.R. System and epoxy-foam resin-fiberglas restoration and reconstruction systems are available to architectural conservators, sometimes offered as proprietary systems or by specialists.1 The long term satisfactory performance of any of these restoration methods depends on halting further progress of the original rot or insect damage after the restoration has been completed." @default.
