- W2432652561 abstract "Coastal resorts, like all other tourist destinations, are dynamic places in which the provision of facilities and access changes to match an evolving market in both quantitative and qualitative terms. Their product width (e.g. new forms of holiday such as activity ones) and their product depth (e.g. the addition of camping and caravan sites for 'traditional' seaside holiday makers) have changed for both demand-led (e.g. demographic changes such as popula tion ageing) and supply-led reasons (e.g. local entrepreneurial initiatives such as pleasure parks). Implicit in this process of change is a capacity for autonomous development on the part of the tourist destination, which has been accepted in theoretical general izations such as the resort cycle and tourism development stage models. These inductive generalizations, arising from an extensive case study base, are destination or resort specific and tend to ignore the wider com petitive dimension (although accepting that progress through the cycle or stage model is not inevitable for any given resort). Furthermore, the geographical scale at which these cyclical and stage models are applicable can be variable since each tourist destination may incorporate a mosaic of resorts or tourist areas, each of which, in turn, comprises a mosaic of tourism enter prises such as hotels, restaurants, theme parks, leisure centres, etc. Within a given tourist destination, resorts may be of different vintage, e.g. in Barbados the west coast resorts are longer established than those of the south coast; and, within a given resort, hotel accommodation, for example, may comprise buildings of varying ages, e.g. the west coast resorts of Barbados built up their hotel and bed capacity over a much longer period of time than south coast resorts, where three-quarters of the capacity is post-1975. It is therefore apposite to reflect on the empirical and theoretical validity of the various cycle and stage models and on their interrelationship, and on what can be learned from them for" @default.
