- W243278493 abstract "A positive outlook for bank-at-home devices may spell trouble for the automated teller machine market The field of home banking service providers is suddenly crowded with players convinced that some consumers are ready to forsake the venerable retail bank branch, and maybe even some of the self-service technology now gaining widespread use. Personal-computer-based services, which met with only limited success in the early and mid-1980s, and telephone-based services are the vehicles of choice today for the on-line service providers. However, there are also believers in interactive television systems as a delivery vehicle for banking functions. Carried to its logical conclusion, home banking will ultimately include the ability to load value onto a plastic card--in effect, a cash withdrawal. Home banking thus would capture the only remaining bank service still requiring a visit to a branch or an automated teller machine. Not that ATM usage would disappear, but the proliferation of home banking efforts outlined here may be food for thought for banks considering significant ATM purchases later in this decade. Enter Microsoft Joining the PC-based home-banking fray is software powerhouse Microsoft Corp., Redmond, Wash. In December, the vendor announced that Version 3.0 of its Microsoft Money personal-finance software would be available this month. For a monthly fee, the new version includes a Bank On-line service as well as Pay On-line (for paying bills electronically) and Quotes On-line (for updating stock and mutual fund portfolios). Bank On-line is the feature Microsoft is banking on to gain it a piece of the home-banking pie. The service connects consumers with their checking, savings, and credit card accounts at participating banks. Once connected, users can check balances, transfer funds between accounts, and download transaction information to a PC. National Payment Clearinghouse, Inc., Downers Grove, Ill., provides the transaction switching and processing services. Three banks had contracted with Microsoft to offer Bank On-line to Microsoft Money users by year-end 1993: Michigan National Bank, Lansing; U.S. National Bank of Oregon, Portland; and First National Bank of Chicago. James Grant, senior vice-president at First Chicago, estimates 27% of his bank's customers have the necessary equipment in place for home That would entail a personal computer with a modem or an enhanced telephone. As personal computers become even more affordable and easier to use, says Grant, our customers are eager to integrate them into every phase of their lives, including banking. The suggested price of Bank On-line is $7.95 per month. Pay On-line costs an additional $9.95 and Quotes On-line costs $3.95 per month. Participating banks may choose to price Bank On-line differently when offered in conjunction with other services. Version 3.0 of the Microsoft Money software--which must be purchased to use Bank On-line--is available at an introductory price of $34.95 until April 15, after which the price is $69.95. U.S. Bank's Rick Comandich, senior vice-president and manager, consumer electronic services, says customer convenience is the primary benefit of Bank On-line. Using this product, customers don't need to manually enter transaction data as with other personal finance software, says Comandich. They can download data directly from their U.S. Bank account and use their time at the computer for financial planning and investment tracking. The Quicken connection Also in December, several bank issuers of Visa credit and debit cards announced their support of an agreement between Visa International and Intuit, the Menlo Park, Calif., vendor of Quicken personal financial software. The two formed an alliance earlier in 1993, giving Visa cardholders the ability to download card-related information to their home computer. …" @default.
